I'd ordered a replacement motor for the Deep Quest as the one that I'd installed didn't seem to have much in the way of revs..the motor arrived this morning, so I thought I'd install it today...a simple five minute job, you'd think? That's what I thought...how wrong can you be.
To start with, the new motor had different sized screws to hold it in the mount...then I discovered that the new mounting plate wouldn't fit in the gap where the old one was, so out it all had to come. That meant removing the radio box, which wasn't really designed to be removed. I managed to remove it ok, after removing the prop shaft, which meant removing the steering nozzle, then the new mount and motor were fitted. Then I discovered that the motor didn't line up with the prop shaft, the coupling wasn't long enough either...so, I made up a new coupling. Then I find that the motor shaft is a touch bigger in diameter that the old one, which meant a trip down to my local tame engineer to have the coupling modified to suit.
Back home, I started reassembling everything...dead easy job, you'd think? Wrong....
Somehow I managed to drop one of the motor fixing screws, which after searching everywhere on the floor remained AWOL...no problem, got plenty of those, so in goes a new screw and I reassemble everything, refit the radio box, and then came the test of the new motor. I switch everything on...the motor spins a millionth of a revolution and jams solid, which in turn blows the esc...
Guess where the missing screw was? Yep...inside the motor. Another new motor needed and a new esc needed...
Gosh and bother it, I said...
