Engel Type IX D2 Empty Engel Type IX D2

Post  Peter Webster Sun Jul 29, 2012 10:45 am

    This is my first post.
    Regarding the holes and slots.
What is the best method for cutting these out. This is my second sub, my first was a dynamic diver I built up from scratch using balsa and perspex. It worked but not as much fun as I hope this one will be.
I have started the slots by using a flexible shaft on a small type of die grinder. Am I doing it right or is there a better, more recommended method, someone in the local boat group suggested a template but I think it will be impractical on the lower hull section.
I hope to post some photos later but I want to get this part of the job done first

Hi Peter, and welcome to our forum..

I've never built an Engel U boat, but the old Darnell U boat method will be the same...I did mine using a drill, drilling a small hole either end of the slot, then joining them up with a selection of needle files. It drove me mad doing them all (I've never been the same since) I set myself a limit of ten holes per session, otherwise it's so easy to lose concentration and wander off the straight line. You can now buy pre cut holes/slots, made from water jet cut perspex from MMB: go to http://www.marksmodelbits.co.uk/, click on 'submarines' and scroll down the page to the bottom, but I'm not sure if the scale will be right for your boat.

    Good luck...
