Many of you will have used these excellent plans over the years, particularly for British subs.

Well John died in January and we have been asked to contact his daughter, Julia to encourage her to maintain the archive etc.

I have just written to her on our behalf:

    Hi Julia,

I was saddened to hear of your Father's death.

He will be missed not least by the modelling fraternity. His submarine plans for British submarines are particularly important.

If you do wish to continue to offer his plans to modellers, we would be very pleased to help with publicity etc. (We are member funded and we are free.)

The perfect inquiry letter, David: respectful, to the point, and clear. Hope this important resource will continue to live.

Our numbers are dwindling by the day.

Thank you, David. It got the following very nice (and hopeful) reply:

    Good morning David,

    Thank you for your message.

Michelle and I are intending to log all Dad's drawings (a formidable task!) We hope to finish by the end of the year and will then know what drawings we have.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can help with anything.

Some potentially good news in the May 2019 issue of "Model Boats" magazine.

    It seems that Seaforth publishing:

    https://www.seaforthpublishing.com/

Have taken over the rights to publish John's work.

The first book on Destroyer Weapons is available soon.

My birthdays have all just come at once!!

I have just received a copy of a new book  "British Submarines in Two World Wars" by Norman Friedman published by Seaforth Publishing. (It is my birthday present.)

I have just  been paging through it and I am so pleased to see that it contains many of John Lambert's submarine drawings (together with many from the National Maritime Museum.)

It also has some drawings which I didn't know John had done (Including the British R class. I had sent him my set of drawings in the hope that he would.)

I will do a proper book review when I have read it but this new book is a very important source of information for those interested in British subs. Thanks also to David J and my colleagues at Barrow in Furness MBC who let me know of its existence.

Norman Friedman is the go-to-guy for rock solid information on submarines. He digs deep and has availed himself of as much source material as any student of the subject has or ever will. In a world where other 'research' type authors keep regurgitating the same old photos, plans, and narrative about the subject, it remains only Friedman who has done such a complete dig through government and private archives to wrestle fact away from hearsay, war-stories, rumor, and out-and-out fallacy.

Friedman is the thinking man's submarine historian. When I have a submarine question, I go to one of his books. Even the footnote pages are captivating and informative. And Friedman does the best job of attribution I've ever seen in this field. What George Will is to political analysis, Friedman is to naval hardware.

    His works are HIGHLY recommended!!!!!!!

    Thanks for your recommendation, David.

I must admit I've only paged through my birthday present, so far, but I'm very impressed by the drawings and photos many of which I have never seen before. I was particularly pleased to see John's drawings seeing the light of day again for everyone at not too high a price. (£40 - that's about   $2 at the moment. Only joking!)

Before I dropped my birthday "hint" I did check out Norman Friedman on the web. About 30 books so far and even some lectures on c-span. Impressive.

Many thanks and I will get reading in August.

    David

In the latest edition of the Seaforth Publishing catalogue, I am very pleased to see that all 3 editions of "British Naval Weapons" drawings by John Lambert with introductory essays by Norman Friedman have just been published:

    https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/British-Naval-Weapons-of-World-War-Two-Hardback/p/17904

No excuse now for not getting that deck gun right!
