      Has any one done this before. My sub can fit in a cardboard box 8"x8"x36". I prefer to hand carry it and the transmitter (in another bag) into the cabin as my hand carry luggage/item.
      I will of course separate the batteries which can go into my checked in luggage.

      will this be allowed by the airlines?
      will I have an issue with TSA?

      appreciate any feedback on this subject.

      Having never done that, I can't help you, but I think you should check with your airline first, they may be issues if you have compressed air or gas ballast systems fitted in the boat.

      You will need all documentation of the manufacturers and something more than cardboard.
      What make boat do you have?
      You can have your boat 3-D scanned and then have a foam case cnc machined in two halves. You can recoup all of your investment if your boat is a popular model by having a dozen made and selling them.
      You can coat the outside of the foam with RTV rubber and then have a Dacron zippered bag custom made to enclose the foam case.

      Giovanni,
      the submarine hull is my design built from scratch out of hobby wood, painted with epoxy to seal it. the SD is from Caswell/ David Merriman design.
      I plan to empty the gas cylinder. separate the SD from the hull. so in all there will be 3 pieces being transported: the hull, the SD. and the R/C transmitter. the batteries will be in my checked it baggage. I am hoping I can hand carry the 3 items packed into two carry ons.
      I guess I will go to the airport and see the airline and TSA folks about it. Then there is the issue of carrying them back from another country whose rules my differ and the folks of the same airline at that air port may have a different point of view.
      this is getting to be a hassle! I might just give up.
      thanks for the advise.
      p.s.
      any idea who can make a foam packaging?

      There are plenty of foam cutting and carving shops using CNC machining in SOCAL.
